UK-based photographer Alice Poyzer documents the strange sophistication embedded in covert details at Crufts' 134th anniversary show

<h1 class="left">A poodle caught in the action as its groomer spritzes hairspray on its coiffed head, elsewhere, another miniature idles in his gold emblazoned Versace pram as his trainer proudly stands beside this sight. Almost a year into photographing canines on the stage, Poyzer found an inclination to document this universe while building on her recent work titled ‘Other Joys,’ an exploration of the role of special interests when navigating life with autism.</h1>

<h1 class="centre">Poyzer is most intrigued with the chemistry between the people who have dedicated their lives to the upkeep of their pedigreed pets and their unique style choices. “Nowhere else would you think to put a sequinned blazer with a pair of New Balance trainers, yet it is common practice for handlers to prioritise both function and fashion in equal measures,” she muses on her experience watching the recent Crufts edition in Birmingham, the legendary dog show celebrating its 134th anniversary this year, unfold. “I like to think that my style of photography at times balances both documentary and the uncanny, focusing on details that draw people in.” Offering insight into the strange sophistication behind pet pageantry, the images hone in on the hidden details, the delicate ministrations of groomers standing beside their poised dogs in everything from skirt suits to cheetah-print leotards. Do dogs embody the owners and their personalities? Only a cheetah-print doggy bow-tie matching its owner's leotard can tell.</h1>
