A photo essay by Steve Ney

The deeply ambiguous space occupied by transgender individuals in India—feared as much as revered—is the tension that lies at the heart of Steve Ney’s photographic work. The Parisian photographer, originally from Pondicherry, spent over fifteen days with the Sahodaran Community Oriented Health Development association in Pondicherry. Led by Sheethal Nayak, a key figure in the defence of LGBTQIA rights in the region since 1998, the Sahodaran Community has created safe spaces away from violence for transgender individuals from working-class backgrounds in Pondicherry. Ney’s work is focused on documenting the rich inner lives, chosen kinship systems, and solidarity, woven into the fabric of the community.
